My background is sociology, research and education, but I've always been a writer and advocate for kids. I write historic fiction for middle-schoolers and create arts and crafts programs, formerly at The Children’s Museum in Boston, MA., and lately for children in El Salvador and Guatemala. I love traveling, exploring ancient sites, and pursuing my family history. I've been captivated by El Salvador, by the warmth of its people, its vivid landscape, and especially the amazing story of Fernando Llort and his art which I've shared in my book, Painting Joy.
When I’m home, my favorites are kids, chocolate, cats, and living in jeans.

Painting Joy: the Art and Life of Fernando Llort.
Fernando Llort, National Artist of El Salvador, created his designs by stirring together a bit of fantasy with pre-Columbian images. His paintings represent his dreams of a world in harmony with nature. During Fernando's search for a life that had meaning, he studied for the priesthood, performed in a rock band, and finally devoted himself to art. Recognized world-wide for his unique style, Fernando transformed a village into a community of artisans, and his images reconnected the people of El Salvador to their ancient past. Books are available in Spanish and English for readers age 13 and up.
Painting Joy is the winner of the Teen and Multicultural categories of the 2023 International Firebird Book Award, the Next Generation Indie Award in nonfiction, and the Readers View Silver Award for Nonfiction in the Arts and Global categories.
