Susanne Schmidt grew up in Germany and fell in love with the English language reading books like le Guin's Earthsea Chronicles. She spent a year in New Zealand during High School and later studied in Spain and the US, eventually earning a B.A. in Journalism from Saint Louis University.

Susanne's middlegrade horror, Bad Grains is a SFINCS semifinalist and Indieverse Awards Nominee for Best Kids' Book. Currently, she is working on a spooky sequel to Bad Grains, an adult epic fantasy vampire trilogy, and an epic, genre-blending story about two immortals fighting each other in a brutal reality show.

When she isn't staring down a blank screen, she is learning how to set up a garden, takes care of two spoiled guinea pigs, and watches too much Netflix with her husband.

What May Rise From the Ashes

Ofronia Mills is far too old to retire. She has spent all her life as a librarian, and when Grand-Director Lorn Van Shipplestorm threatens not only her job, but the integrity of the library itself, she has no choice but to act. Evading her boss and Tess Dingly, it-girl and reluctant librarian apprentice, Ofronia descends into the library's forgotten fourth basement, which once housed the collection of magic books. While Van Shipplestorm plots to bar the general populace from even entering the hallowed halls, Ofronia must decide what to do with what she finds. Will she entrust her fate to magic, although she once refused to learn anything about it? Or will she walk away quietly, like she has done all her life?

Words Like Promises

An elegant collection of poetry that is relatable, enjoyable, and worth reading. - Reedsy Discovery

Dark poetry from European suburbia, Words Like Promises explores the discrepancy between what we wish we had, what we perceive as should be, and the reality in which we sometimes find ourselves. It searches for answers for a better future in a world that perhaps no longer cares.

Bad Grains (The Order of the Strawberry Circle Book 1)

A middlegrade horror based on German folklore, and a homage to all things Halloween, Bad Grains follows eleven-year-old Jo Berger who must rescue her older brother who has disappeared into a mysterious misty rye field.

Bad Grains is a 2023 SFINCS semifinalist and nominated for two Indieverse Awards.
