R. Marsden writes books set in the thirteenth century in a small independent kingdom to the east of England. Lord Rory, a Knight-Crusader in the frontier shire of Hambrig, sets down in his adventures and challenges in journals which tell of battles, intrigue, mystery, magic – and strange, unaccountable glimpses into the future.

Alchemy and the occult run through this medieval world, in which Rory fights the demons within himself as much as the forces that threaten to overpower his castle.

R. Marsden is an author and musician, passionate about the late thirteenth century. He produces a regular newsletter for readers of his books: The Household News. To sign up for The Household News and to read more about Rory's magical adventures, please go to the Tales of Castle Rory website.

The Box of Death

The swamp-people are mobilising. Soon the lord of Hambrig’s castle will be under attack…

It’s AD 1263. The country of Mallrovia lies just to the east of England, and the frontier shire of Hambrig is in danger. Decades of hostility are about to culminate in a pitched battle. Yet the swamp-people have a point – this land was once theirs. Now they are coming to take it back, reinforced by a formidable foreign army. The survival of Hambrig seems impossible.

Once, Hambrig had a treaty with the swamp-people, but the treaty was lost and their king went into exile. Confined to the swamps for the last hundred years, the tribe want their land back. More than that – they want their revenge.

And now a strange box has appeared in the castle on the hill. It carries with it a cryptic message from the enemy.

Opening the box spells death – but it seems there is no choice…

The Soldier of Fortune

A girl has been murdered in the castle, and the lord of Hambrig is under arrest. To clear his name he must find the killer, but instead he chooses to help his brother, a mercenary soldier who’s in deep trouble…

It’s AD 1264. The English barons are in rebellion, led by Simon de Montfort. Lord Rory’s younger brother has joined in the fight against King Henry III – but he has made dangerous enemies. Desperate to help his brother, Lord Rory ignores the murder charges against him and rides to the rescue. But in so doing, he leaves his castle in even greater peril.

With evil stalking the land, the lord of Hambrig must try to regain control – but even the King is against him now…
