5.0 out of 5 stars Edge-of-the-seat thriller The Reluctant Courier by Pam Stevens is an absolute page-turner that kept me on the edge of my seat! From the moment Sandra Stanford unwittingly finds herself in possession of an envelope that could change everything, I was hooked. Pam Stevens masterfully crafts a blend of just the right amounts of suspense, mystery, and romance, making it impossible to put this book down. The author takes pains to flesh out Sandra’s character, a relatable and grounded heroine, who draws you into her world as she transforms from a quiet cafe-goer to a brave adventurer thrust into a life-threatening quest. The twists and turns kept me riveted, and I found myself cheering for Sandra through each thrilling nail-biting sequence. This is a high-stakes drama laced with very real danger and filled with deeply engaging characters. This book delivers a thrilling mystery and then some. For hardcore thriller mystery junkies, it does not get better than this. Giving this five stars, hands down.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fast-paced thriller with a compelling protagonist What an exciting read! In the thriller/mystery genre, it can be difficult to find books that truly stand out these days, that aren’t formulaic or fraught with cliches, but The Reluctant Courier, from the first sentence, sets itself apart. The descriptions stood out to me first, Sandra’s narrative voice full of razor-sharp humor and deduction that bring the nearly war-torn world to life around her. The opening sequence of the hit-and-run introduces an airtight mystery plot navigated by an unlikely protagonist who is interesting independent of her encounter with the dark government underworld: a professional rodeo contestant with a complicated love life. One of my favorite details about this character is the near fourth-wall breaks where Sandra admits the skills required for her survival and double life are all taken from thriller books themselves; I thought this was a clever touch that makes her all the more relatable. Overall, I recommend this book to anyone looking for vibrant action scenes, gripping twists, and authentic characters; Stevens is a brilliant writer, and I am looking forward to any future works.
