Magic and Medicine

By Olena Nikitin

I always knew when a patient was about to die, but this one didn’t get the memo.

My hospital shifts were always plagued with oddities, but nothing could prepare me for a vampire rising from the dead on my table to demand his dagger back.

To make matters worse, his boss, Leszek, stormed in, commanding my compliance. When he touched me, my self-control shattered, and a vision of ancient gods awakened something buried deep inside me – a gift I’d tried to hide.

He claimed I belonged to him, but he would soon learn that not even the kingpin of the magical underworld could tell me what to do.

Still, when he knocked at my door armed with a caramel latte, asking me to help those injured by an unknown weapon, I could not deny him.

After all, I am Sara, doctor extraordinaire, and werewolves are patients, too. If only I’d known this would make me a target for Leszek’s enemies… I would’ve held out for a cinnamon bun.
