“Elemental” by Liane Mahugh is an engaging blend of science fiction and fantasy, centred around a young protagonist named Raya. The novel begins with an intriguing premise that captures the reader’s attention from the first chapter: Raya’s extraordinary ability to summon lightning and other elements during a simulated event – extraordinary powers she initially believes to be confined to her imagination. The story begins on the alien world of Solara where scientific advancements intersect with supernatural abilities, creating a unique and compelling environment. Raya, recovering from a physically and mentally taxing trial, is thrust upon a quest that takes her on a reconnaissance mission to Earth. Her mission includes the recovery of the crew from a previous mission with whom Solora has lost contact which leads to her uncovering deeper truths about herself and the human world on which she has become stranded. Raya is a well-developed character whose journey from initial confusion to self-discovery makes for highly entertaining and addictive reading. The supporting characters, including Uncle Jake, Priya, Quinn and Dev are integral to Raya’s development and the story’s progression. Each character is distinct, contributing to the richness of the narrative through their interactions and the roles they play in Raya’s journey. “Elemental” explores several themes, including self-discovery, the intersection of science and magic, and the ethical implications of advanced technologies. The novel raises questions about the potential and limitations of human abilities, the power of the subconscious mind, and the consequences of wielding such power. It also delves into the importance of understanding one’s true self and the impact of extraordinary abilities on personal identity and societal expectations. This is particularly evident when Raya finds herself interned at Area 51 where a graphic showdown develops between Ray and USAF soldiers under the command of General Decker who wants to control her powers for military use. Mahugh’s writing style is clear and descriptive, making complex scientific concepts accessible to readers while maintaining a sense of wonder and excitement. The pacing is well-balanced, with moments of intense action interspersed with introspective passages that allow readers to connect with Raya’s internal struggles. The dialogue is natural and effectively conveys the characters’ emotions and motivations. While “Elemental” is a captivating read, it occasionally relies on familiar tropes within the young adult and fantasy genres. Some plot twists can be anticipated, and certain character arcs follow predictable paths. However, this does not detract from the overall enjoyment of the story and actually adds to its appeal. Conclusion “Elemental” is a cleverly conceived and entertaining novel that will appeal to fans of both science fiction and fantasy. Liane Mahugh has crafted a story that seamlessly blends technological advancements with magical elements, creating a narrative that is both imaginative and grounded in relatable human experiences. Raya’s journey of self-discovery, coupled with the novel’s exploration of her abilities and ethical dilemmas, makes “Elemental” a compelling 5-star read for young adults and beyond.
