Lights! Curtains! Cows!

Can Becky and Friends Save Cow Valley?

Each summer in Ellis, Manitoba, Frank Derksen stages “The Legend of Cow Valley”, a play about an exciting town legend. Traditionally, the town’s grade-seven kids are the stars. This is all about to change when Mr. Derksen sells part of his farm to the government as a historic site…could this be the end of the famed Lights! Curtains! Cows! in Ellis?

There is no greater fan of The Legend of Cow Valley than Becky Kowalski, who has dreamed all her life of playing Catastrophe Cate, the show’s hero. When the play is going to close for good, charistmatic Becky rallies her best friend Greg and the rest of their grade-seven friends to save it. However, Ms. Noring, the stern government official in charge of the new historic site, stands in the way of their plans. Worst of all, Ms. Noring is planning to stage a new play that the kids recognize instantly as an incredible flop.

With determination and plenty of hilarious twists and turns, Becky, Greg and their friends begin to practice The Legend of Cow Valley in secret and plan a surprise performance for the town. But with an adversary like Ms. Noring, can they really pull it off?

Mermaid Warrior Squad

Sometimes Real Life Is Just As Exciting As Comic-Book Adventures!

Mermaid Warrior Squad is Karin Adams’ fifth book for young readers. With her usual humour and knack for getting to the heart of real-world, real-kid friendships, this summer arts camp-themed story unfolds in short, snappy chapters along with an exciting ‘comic book’ subplot!

As shy Dylan navigates the choppy waters of intense camp friendships, her vivid imagination creates a parallel story played out in comic book panels (gorgeously illustrated by Canadian artist Janine Carrington). Can Dylan harness the strength of her comic book alter ego – the mermaid warrior ‘Driftwood’ – in order to foil a plot to prank the art showcase, and stick up for her camp bestie?

The two girls plan a comic about lifeguards who are transformed into mermaids and fight for eco-justice in the sea. The mermaid warriors become Dylan and Coral's alter egos. But when Coral's in-your-face behavior draws the attention of the camp mean girls and a boy who is determined to prank the camp's final show, Dylan has a decision to make. Should she stay behind the scenes, or should she channel her inner mermaid warrior to save Coral and the show?

Frostbite Hotel

Put Your Feet Up – But Leave Your Boots On!

Kirby Katz has big dreams of making his fortune as an entrepreneur, just like his role model, hotel magnate William T. Williamson. But Kirby discovers that operating a ‘snow hotel’ in the schoolyard comes with its own set of challenges: sourcing the best snow blocks, staff ‘team-building,’ marketing, and competition from Brewster’s Best Five-Star Inn run by the Bear and his gang of the meanest kids in Grade 6.

The trouble is, The Bear and his nasty crew of Grade Sixers have built a snow hotel of their own. Not only that, each time Kirby comes up with a fresh idea, The Bear has beat him to it! As the coincidences pile up like snow blocks, Kirby begins to suspect that one of his friends may be betraying Frostbite Hotel’s best business secrets to the competition…

You’ll enjoy meeting Kirby, Marvin, Jeannie and the rest of the gang (even The Bear…if you dare!). Fun doodle-art throughout the book adds to the fun…a great read to warm up your winter (or cool down your summer!)
