I live and work on the small Orkney island of Flotta. I've been knitting, designing and writing since I was small and enjoy bringing traditional stitches to modern knitters. I have self-published several books, including Patterns for North Ronaldsay Yarn, The Gansey Workbook, The Fair Isle Workbook and the Fine Spinning Workbook. I am the author of the best-selling ‘The Magic of Shetland Lace Knitting’ published by Search Press in the UK and St Martins in the USA, a book which as been translated into 6 or 7 languages. I am the editor of 'Centenary Stitches', a book of patterns updated from the WW1 era.

Centenary Stitches - patterns from WW1 recreated for the film 'Tell Them of Us'

Most war films are told from the soldiers' point of view. 'Tell Them of Us' tells the story of one family's war through the women left behind. Grace Crowder had two bothers who went to fight: Robert was killed and William, though taken prisoner, survived. The film concentrates on Grace, her mother and William's girlfriend.
As Grace and her mother were known to be knitters, the call went out via Twitter to find knitters prepared to knit for the film, and for an exhibition of the costumes and other knits from that era. From this came the book Centenary Stitches, with 74 patterns written for modern knitters and yarns. Unlike patterns of the day, these come in a wide range of sizes.
The book also contains chapters on knitting in WW1, costuming a period film and adapting vintage patterns, as well as extracts from William's diaries.
