Police Slang

By Charles Harris

Confused by what cops say on TV shows or what you read in crime novels and true stories? This book will inform, entertain and perhaps even help when writing your next crime thriller.

Police Slang came as a result of research on my new novel, which involved spending a great deal of time with the police. I found the language used by our police is both very funny, very scurrilous and very revealing.

Favourites include SQJ, for a yellow high-visibility jacket (short for Stupid Question Jacket. Because when you put one on, that’s what you get). And the many rather less than flattering terms for civilian Police Community Support Officers (eg: CHIMPS – Can’t Help In Most Police Situations).

There are also the key serious terms used in everyday policing. Get one, and learn to tell your tea boys from your lids!
