The Breaking of Liam Glass

With London knife crime now on the rise, this is not so much a whodunnit as a blackly comic what-they-did-after-it satire, that resonates in a timely way.

Teenage footballer Liam Glass is stabbed on an estate next to London's Regents Park and, with an eye to the main chance, journalist Jason Crowthorne sets out to make the most of the story and build a crusade against teenage knife-crime.

In the following 24 hours, Jason creates his campaign, hiding a scoop from rival journalists and avoiding arrest.

But other powerful figures are determined to exploit the boy's story as much as they can, and they have fewer scruples! Liam Glass is a darkly satirical look at the deep splits in modern communities, asking deep moral questions with sympathy and humour.

Jaws in Space: Powerful Pitching for Film and TV Screenwriters

Two screenwriters once walked into a Hollywood producer’s office and said three words ‘Jaws in space.’ That three-word pitch won them the contract for the blockbuster movie Alien.

The ability to pitch well is essential for all writers, directors and producers in cinema and TV, drama, documentary and series. Strong pitching skills will accelerate your career.

Not only helping you sell your projects, but also developing them in the first place – focusing on what makes a story work, clarifying character and plot, and working more successfully with industry collaborators.

What makes a good pitch
This book takes you from the essentials of what makes a good pitch to advanced skills that will help you in all kinds of pitching situations. Charles Harris gives a clear-sighted view of how pitching works in the industry and a series of very practical techniques for developing a gripping and convincing pitch.

An award-winning writer-director for cinema and TV, Charles has taught writers, directors and producers from all over the world. Following the courses, they’ve attracted the interest of agents, landed meetings with major TV stations and film companies, sold their scripts and had their films made.

Pitching mainstream and unconventional projects
In Jaws in Space, he examines the problems that can arise with both mainstream and unconventional projects – movies, TV dramas, documentaries and series, from a range of different cultures. He then explains how to solve them.

He also analyses the process of taking a pitch meeting and shows you how to ensure you perform at your best.

Jaws in Space is an Amazon best-seller and recommended reading on university MA courses in screenwriting and creative writing.

Police Slang

Confused by what cops say on TV shows or what you read in crime novels and true stories? This book will inform, entertain and perhaps even help when writing your next crime thriller.

Police Slang came as a result of research on my new novel, which involved spending a great deal of time with the police. I found the language used by our police is both very funny, very scurrilous and very revealing.

Favourites include SQJ, for a yellow high-visibility jacket (short for Stupid Question Jacket. Because when you put one on, that’s what you get). And the many rather less than flattering terms for civilian Police Community Support Officers (eg: CHIMPS – Can’t Help In Most Police Situations).

There are also the key serious terms used in everyday policing. Get one, and learn to tell your tea boys from your lids!

“I love the short story collection, ‘The Cupboard’. Charles Harris’s use of language and his writing temp are excellent. Even in a short story he can draw out the conclusion masterfully. The Cupboard the first story in the selection is my favourite. Well done and look forward to reading more of your work.”
