Barbara Speake was born in Connecticut, moving to England in 1972 following her marriage. She had a varied career as a research psychologist and a clinical psychologist, as well as holding various management positions in the NHS. She now writes full time. Her debut novel (2005) was Secrets Only Sleep, introducing the Westford Connecticut Police Department. She then went on to develop the Detective Annie Macpherson series, where the Scottish detective works in Connecticut with the Westford Police. The books in that series are: Primed by the Past (2011), Programmed to Kill (2012), Past Deception (2014) Scared to Tell (2015), Based on Lies (2017), Committed to Revenge (2018), Punish the Guilty (2019) and Question the Lies (2020) and Face the Lies (2021). Her first two Annie novels, Primed by the Past and Programmed to Kill, jointly won first place in a 2013 Self Published Book Award. In 2011, her debut novel, Secrets Only Sleep came third in the same award. Primed by the Past was also one of four novels shortlisted for a national award in 2012. In addition to her novels, Barbara also writes short stories and facilitates a crime-writing group. She has also published a collection of short stories and flash fiction, Shades of Crime:Dark and Light (2022), which contains short stories of various lengths and 100 stories of 99 words each.
